Emmanuel’s personal community development service (CDS) project involved constructing and installing directional signposts at twelve (12) strategic locations throughout the Epe community. This effort aims to improve municipal service delivery and provide clear street directions, greatly benefiting the residents.

Emmanuel is one of the many young Nigerians I have the honor of mentoring. He embodies the spirit of leading change through community service, particularly in rural areas across Nigeria. According to him, about 200 people living along these 12 streets benefit from this project. His dedication and hard work make me incredibly proud.

Muhammad Idris launched Life Impact in 2016 with the goal of mentoring youth corps members to create meaningful impacts in their communities during their service period. Since its inception, the initiative has made significant strides, reaching 22 states across Nigeria and engaging 156 corps members.I am thrilled to share that five of my mentees have received governorship awards, while two have been honored with presidential awards during this period demonstrating its sustained impact.

Operated through various Community Development Service (CDS) projects, Muhammad Idris Life Impact (MILI) addresses diverse community needs. It prioritizes health and medical outreach programs, aiming to improve community health outcomes. Its Educational initiatives include renovating classrooms, providing essential tools like books, learning boards, desk & chairs, and establishing libraries to enhance learning environments. Additionally, the program emphasizes skill acquisition, empowering community members with practical abilities that contribute to local development.

Beyond health and education, Life Impact promotes community security measures and raises awareness about critical social issues. By fostering collaboration and community involvement, the initiative encourages a holistic approach to community development, addressing multiple facets of societal well-being.

Overall, Muhammad Idris’s initiative continues to make a positive impact by empowering youth corps members to lead initiatives that benefit their communities, fostering sustainable development and positive change.

This is Chukwu Lucky Ndubisi, one of the youths (National Youth Service Corps) members I am mentoring on community development service.

In the heart of Idiroko, a small community in Ogun State, Nigeria, a wave of empowerment and skill acquisition is sweeping through, thanks to the passionate efforts of Chukwu Lucky Ndubisi, a dedicated member of the NYSC.

Under the banner of “Youth Empowerment and Skill Acquisition in Idiroko,” Lucky and his team embarked on a mission to uplift the young adults, youth, and women in the area by equipping them with invaluable skills. From the artistry of cosmetology to the precision of baking, the creativity of crocheting, and the vibrant world of tie and dye, participants were immersed in a diverse array of learning opportunities. But it didn’t stop there; the project also delved into the realms of shoe making, paint production, forex trading, and graphics design, opening doors to a world of possibilities for the eager learners.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Idiroko, the project came to life, transforming the lives of over 500 attendees (both physical and virtual) who seized the chance to expand their horizons and carve out new paths for themselves. The bustling energy of the community was palpable as individuals young and old gathered to partake in this enriching experience, fueled by the shared desire for growth and self-improvement.

Yet, behind the scenes, there was dedication and sacrifice. With a budget of N250,000 naira, Lucky and his team poured their hearts and souls into making this initiative a reality, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to serving their country and uplifting their fellow citizens.

As the echoes of laughter and the hum of creativity filled the air in Idiroko, Lucky reflects on the journey with gratitude. “We wouldn’t stop affecting lives positively,” he declares, reaffirming his commitment to making a difference, one person at a time. And to Lucky, and all those like him, we extend our heartfelt thanks for their selfless service and dedication to building a brighter future for us all. In 2015, I received the NYSC state award for community service, though my project didn’t make it to the presidential award nomination. In 2016, I started an online mentoring to guide other corps members on community service. Recently, on Thursday, February 11, 2021, two of my mentees, Paul and Ruqayat, won a Presidential Award and received federal appointments. Ruqayat worked on a clean water project in Kogi, and Paul Imasuen empowered school children and built a vigilante post in a remote community in Niger State. This accomplishment brings me immense satisfaction. I’m grateful.

The pace at which Nigeria is driving towards underdevelopment is on the increase, the youths on the one hand shy away from participating in community development activities.

In June, 2016, before the creation of bckupmoidris.anl.org.ng, getting a better coverage of the youths across Nigeria was a problem, so I created a profile (tetengi4life) on Nairaland and became one of the leading contributors under the NYSC section via this thread ( https://www.nairaland.com/3180268/nysc-personal-cds-procedures-made)  before migrating to Muhammadidris.org where I wrote about community service and its procedures, at the same time used it as an avenue to get across youths for mentorship by connecting it with my WhatsApp number.

It has impacted over 5,000 people in the last 3 years through the projects done by dozens of corps members under my mentorship.

So far, as at june 2019,  6 state awardees were birthed from this platform, 2 of which were recommended for presidential award (the one I never had) and it has given a self fulfillment which I have never felt in my life before.

Project: Library project at L.E.A festival road nursery and Primary school Garki, Area 10 Abuja.
He reconstructed a library and donate books and shelves for the use of the primary school pupils. The primary school Library project is currently improving the academics and making learning easier for the primary school pupils. Below pictures are when he was commissioning it in the present of some NYSC and the school officials.

Over 6000 corps members where posted to Abuja (stream 1 and 2), 14 where selected as the best on 7th of April, 2017 due to their community service. One of them was the Aromeh Michael (whom i coached).

3. STELLA IBIDUNNI
Date of Project Commission:  1st of January, 2018.
Location: Maikunkule, Minna, Niger State.
Project: Renovation and total restructuring of public toilet.

This is a project (total restructuring of a public toilet and Incinerator) carried out by two corps members (Stella and Abbas) in Maikunkule, Minna, Niger state. Stella is a corps member from my online coaching class whom i mentored on the step by step process of how to get her project accepted by NYSC and to the point of getting funding to carry out the project.

The public toilet was an abandoned building used for refuse dump before Stella intervention. When she showed me the pictures (1st pic below), i told her we shall make it possible and give it a face lift for the good health of the community people.

It started by some few donations like bags of cements until it was all completed. Till today, I and Stella have never seen each other, we only coomunicate via internet.

Project:  skill acquisition, school competition that was graced by the community traditional ruler. She carried out a water treatment advocacy project where she shared water treating chemicals to the rural community people to avert the detriments of dirty water among the common populace.

On 25th of April, 2019 to mark world malaria day she did a walk against malaria ( sensitization of the community on malaria prevention). Other project includes

– distribution of mosquito nets to pregnant and nursing mothers
– distribution of insecticides

Basically it was a free medical outreach to over 250 people (mostly women and children.

CORPS MEMBER DISTRIBUTES SANITARY PADS TO OVER 200 GIRLS IN OSUN

It was an aura of excitement at L.A Secondary School, Ipetumodu, Ife North when a corps member; Oladoja Oladotun Yussuf with state code OS/18B/3184 distributed sanitary pads to female secondary school students on Thursday 18th, July 2019 to mark the Nelson Mandela International Day.

Dr. Oladotun carried out this project as his Community Development Service (CDS) personal project to educate, create awareness and encourage adolescent girls on the use of sanitary pads. The success of the program was geared towards supporting the effort of government in the area of girl child reproduction health education.

A reproductive health expert, Mrs Damilola Olojugba lectured the students on menstrual health hygiene and answered questions from both students and staff.
Showing his gratitude to the initiator of the program tagged “GIRL PERIOD SCHOOL PERIOD”, the vice principal of the school poured a bliss of blessing onto him and enjoined him to continue with humanitarian projects.

On Friday, the following day, the same program took place at Hudar Rahman International School, Odo-Oba Area along Awosun Express Road, Ipetumodu.
Thrilled with joy, the principal of Hudar Rahman International School, Mr Yusuf Ayinla, applauded the initiator of the program and appreciated his project impact on the students.

Finally, Dr. Oladotun rendered all the glory to God for the realization of the project which cost thousands of naira and appreciated the help of his fellow corps members. He was also grateful to his sponsors especially Dr pastor Abiola and Mr Yusuf Salaudeen without the support of whom the project would not be materialized.

It stroke me today as so many of my friends (corpers) were asking me on how to engage in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) personal Community Developtment Service (CDS) because they also want to affect life positively as corps members. This gave me the passion to also share with others through Nairaland.

Some do it because of the award (state and presidential honor), some do it because of the joy in it as they change life(s), but whatever is your reason(s), these are the procedures to follow.

1. Project Title :
You must have carried out investigation on what project you want to do and where you want to do it. But it is important to note these when choosing your project because where you carried out your project matters alot. E.g A corps member that dug a bore hole in a slum (environment with poor people) will be highly recognized and valued than the one that dug similar bore hole in the government house etc. Secondly you should give the people what they need, not what they don’t need at that moment e.g do not give an hungry man cloth to wear, instead you should give him food because at that moment, he/she needs food to survive before clothing.

2. Project Analysis
By now you must have known the project you want to carry out. The analysis includes; (i) the cost (ii) beneficiary (iii) sponsor (only if u hv any at that moment) (iv) starting date and closing date (at which the project is expected to end).

3. Project Approval
The project approval is usually given by the NYSC. It is important you get it because your name and nysc number will be written on it and it is required you attach it to any of your solicitation letters. In addition to that, it is only way your project will be documented by nysc for any reward or recognition. And to get it, you must apply for it, and to apply for it, you will have to write a letter to nysc following all the necessary chain of command and you will be required to attach your project analysis on that letter of request for approval letter.

2. Project analysis that you will attach to the letter 1 above.
That’s all you need to kick-start your project. Send me your email to forward the sample to you (free of charge) because its in diagrammatic form (with horizontal and vertical lines) as such I always find it difficult to past it for people. If you receive it all you need to do is to substitute, no stress.

NOTE: this sample is for Gombe state nysc, I don’t know of other states but they said it is the same everywhere. And for those after state award, 2 different corps members serving in different state may end up doing similar project but one may be awarded and the other may not. It depends on the state and competition e.g corps member doing personal CDS in Lagos and Abj may or may not get a state award as those corpers serving in less competitive/less corper populated states like Gombe and others on similar project. In those other competitive states, u may hv to do more.

On the 21st of June, 2016, I was contacted by a long time friend from school asking about how I did my Personal Community Development Service otherwise known as Personal CDS as he saw the picture when I was awarded by the Gombe State Governor for carrying out a community service in Gombe State Prison Yard.

As someone that keeps records of all what I do, I still have some of the documents (letters and pictures) which I shared with him to use as a guide to replicate something similar or even do better in his state of national service.

He was so thankful and the gesture inspired me to reach out to a larger audience where i tapped from the pool of traffic coming into nairaland.com to share my experience (free of charge) to help NYSC (youths) across the country  through this platform

This gesture has really inspired many and have produced 3 State award winners from my online coaching class. (detailed in the next articles…)

P.S: NYSC stands for National Youth Service Corps. It is compulsory 1 year service for all Nigerian graduates before going into the labour market.

But the personal CDS is voluntary which was the one i did i addition to my service inspired by my zeal in touching lives anywhere i go.
