After the Manifesto night and the election, I won the election and became the President of SPAN (Students Physiological Association of Nigeria) Ahamdu Bello university Zaria chapter.
STEP ONE (1): I quickly assembled 11 Excos where I told them my agenda but that was not all as I donated my phone as my contribution to the coffer of the Association which inspired the rest of the executives to contribute also. That was the proceed we used to hit the ground running starting from our first project on the list; which was
- ORIENTATION PROGRAM: Organized an orientation program for the new intake students. We make sure we invited the stakeholders in the school to educate them on various fields including the security office to warn them against cultism. It was successful.
STEP TWO (2): Until my tenure, the department (physiology) is not known in the school but I made it my responsibility as the president to make it popular and it was made possible through an unconventional medium.
- SPORT UPDATE: Knowing that 70% of male students and some percentage of female students are footballer supporters, so I tapped from such pool of audience by making it easy for them to access information (updates) for their passion.
We began by writing sport update and place on every boards in strategic places in the school every Monday morning after the weekend matches. Before we knew what was happening, our news spread like wild fire. We became the talk of the day as the students began to become addicted to our weekly reports and update.
STEP THREE (3): After observing that the only lecturing table in the blue seat Lecture Theatre in Faculty of Medicine was damaged, we;
- CONSTRUCTED A LECTURE TABLE and painted it Nigerian national color. It may look small but it matters a lot to especially to the people that make use of it as we heard a particular biochemistry Lecturer prayed for our administration for repairing the table because he always rest on it.
STEP FOUR (4): There are things I don’t jock with, one of them is Academic performance of the students as such we made sure our administration do something for the entire students of faculty of medicine and the school in general.
- TUTORIALS: We organized night tutorials where we invite experts in certain fields to re₋teach what was taught in class and it really helped considering their later performance.
BRAINSTORM: We organized brainstorm (mock exams) to prepare the 100 level students from various departments across the school on the possible questions and challenges faced in the exam hall along with the solutions.
STEP FIVE (5): In light to educate the students that, even as the academics is their primary objectives, they should still make out time for exercise and using the same medium to unite the students. So we organized a
- FOOTBALL COMPETITION: A competition between several departments like Physiology, Quantity Survey, Physics, Nursing etc organized by SPAN
STEP SIX (6): We donated clock to the Pre-clinical Library in the faculty of Medicine.
STEP SEVEN (7): We donated weighing scale to the Physiology Laboratory.
STEP EIGHT (8): To extend our gesture of advocating for quality education beyond the school walls, we organized a
- SECONDARY SCHOOL QUIZ COMPETITION: we organized quiz competition among some secondary school within our community. The competition brought some schools like Islamic Trust of Nigeria, Demonstration Secondary School, Therbow Secondary School and Government Secondary School Jamaah.
STEP NINE (9): In making sure the community was healthy, we organized
- A MEDICAL OUTREACH within the school (at the front of Ribadu female hostel) where we conducted several health activities like HIV test, Body Mass Index (BMI), Blood pressure level check, vision test, enlightenment on several diseases like breast cancer, ulcer, menstrual abnormalities etc. to the general public.
STEP TEN (10): Annually, every school chapter (wing) of the Association meet at a chosen state where some academic and social events are organized to equip the students in facing the contemporary societies including the Labor market.
- NATIONAL CONFERENCE: So I led the students from North West Nigeria (Kaduna State) to the National conference at South west Nigeria (Oyo State) at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in 2013, and we were the most disciplined, cultured and coordinated amongst all and were emulated by other schools. This made us win a national award, a position which hitherto has never happened before.
STEP ELEVEN (11): To fulfill our social commitment, we took the students to an
- EXCURSION at Ilejesha waterfall where they had an experience of a lifetime.
Other achievements are Lecture notes, stickers, T-shirts etc.
Because of these achievements, I was given my first award; THE GREAT SON OF SPAN.
